How to Mark World Environment Day 2025

World Environment Day is being held on Thursday 5th June this year. With the special day just around the corner, it’s important that you understand what it is, why it’s important and how you can celebrate World Environment Day. But don’t worry, because we have you covered in our latest article.

What is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day is something that’s marked every year on 5th June. It’s a global initiative that aims to raise awareness of environmental issues, as well as making sure people know how to combat those problems. It’s organised and officially hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It allows for governments and people to come together to address environmental concerns. But how can you mark World Environment Day?

How to mark World Environment Day 2025

There are many ways in which World Environment Day can be marked. But if you’ve never celebrated the day before, then you might be wondering what you can do to make the most of the day ahead. From learning more about the climate crisis to hosting a community clean-up, here are a few ways in which you can mark World Environment Day 2025:

Learn more about the climate crisis

It’s important that you know and understand why we mark World Environment Day. The obvious reason is to try and reverse the damage done to the planet. But why is the planet in such disarray, environmentally? Do some research to find out why World Environment Day is needed. This will help to motivate you when it comes to celebrating the day effectively.

Enjoy some time outdoors

Sometimes, World Environment Day just gives you the opportunity to relax, enjoy and appreciate nature. This newfound appreciation will help to motivate you to keep the planet clean, doing as much as you can to reduce your carbon footprint, protect wildlife and to keep our ecosystems working as they should. Your time outdoors could involve a multitude of things, from relaxing and watching the bird flutter by to de-weeding or removing rubbish from your garden that may have flown in on the wind.

Host a community clean-up

Whether your community is rife with littering or there are just a few weeds sprouting in the road, it’s always a good idea to get a few people together to do a community clean-up. Don’t limit yourself to just one street, either. Make sure that you’re covering as much ground as possible, whether it be throughout your village or just the town centre. Go around with those in your community and pick up rubbish and weeds as you go along. This helps to protect both the wildlife and plant life.

Employ the three Rs

The three Rs are simple to follow and easy to maintain, provided you know what they are. They’re also something that you should be employing throughout the rest of the year, and not just on World Environment Day. So, what are the three Rs? The three Rs are as follows:

  • Reuse - make sure you use items again and again, preventing them from entering landfill sites
  • Reduce - reduce the amount of single-use items you’re using. In turn, this will limit the amount you’re sending to landfill
  • Recycle - if your items are recyclable, make sure they end up in the right recycling bins. This way, they can be turned into brand-new products

Donate old clothes, rather than throwing them away

If you have any unwanted clothes or any other items in the home that you no longer want or need, then make sure you donate them or give them away to family and friends rather than throwing them in the bin, provided they’re in good condition. This will ensure that your unwanted items, whether they be clothing or otherwise, get a new lease of life instead of being thrown in a landfill. This will give someone else a chance to enjoy your unwanted items, as well as make sure that you’re reducing your carbon footprint.
